Masaaki Kobayashi
Masaaki Kobayashi was born in 1941 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. While studying at Aoyama Gakuin University as a member of the photography club, his work was published in photography magazines, leading to an encounter with photography critic Nobuya Yoshimura. Through repeated discussions at Yoshimura’s home, surrounded by rare overseas photobooks from his collection, he sharpened his perspective as a photographer. After graduating from university, he joined Light Publicity, a company he admired for its work on posters for the Tokyo Olympics, where he learned practical photographic techniques under Yūzō Satō. In 1968, he was introduced as one of twelve emerging photographers in the August issue of Camera Mainichi.
He became freelance in 1971 and established the Masaaki Kobayashi Photography Studio. In 1985, through professional assignments, he had the opportunity to photograph Joseph Beuys,
opening expressive possibilities beyond the boundaries of commercial photography. In his personal work, he boldly pursued experimental methods—transforming hotel rooms into pinhole cameras and using tents as gigantic cameras to expose landscapes onto custom-made 40-inch (or 42-inch) film. For commercial photography, he frequently used 8×10 and medium-format film. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 81.
